Disney’s Beauty and the Beast Jr. – March 11 – 13, 2010
General Information
We are excited to announce that the school play for the 2009-10 year is Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast Jr.”, which will be performed March 11 – 13, 2010. Mrs. Karen Barrus and Mrs. Erin Tennison will be co-directing this year with Mrs. Lisa Pappalardo as assistant director. Mrs. Heidi Andrews and Mrs. Anne Marie Blair will be co-producing this year. We are thrilled to have Mrs. Lynn Semelsberger, a parent in our school community and a professional vocal instructor as our musical director for this production. While this production is shorter and has fewer speaking lines, the music and dancing numbers are very challenging and provide ample stage time to all of our participants.
The following should answer most of our frequently asked questions. Please check back on October 15 when audition packets and scripts will be available for downloading.
ANSWERS TO YOUR BURNING QUESTIONS:
Auditions will be held on November 2 and 4 after school with callbacks on November 12. The play experience is designed for our 1st – 5th graders, but Kindergarteners with a strong desire to participate may be cast if there are openings. Audition and parent information packets, including audition scripts may be downloaded from this website on October 15. Those wishing to audition should prepare a song of their choosing not to exceed 2 minutes in length which will be performed acapella (no music). The casting committee includes a panel of the directors, the musical director, and at least one producer.
REHEARSALS will begin in January and will take place on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays from 2:05 – 4:30 p.m. in January. Rehearsals may extend to 5:00 p.m. sometime in February. Saturday rehearsals take place on February 27 and March 6 from 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. All participants will have rehearsal on Friday, and most participants will have one other rehearsal each week either on Tuesday or Thursday. Attendance at rehearsals must hold a high priority in our play families’ schedules. Scholars may not use play practice as an excuse for late homework or poor classwork performance. Scholars who are absent from school may not attend rehearsal or any performance scheduled that day.
FINANCIAL COMMITMENT: The participation fee per cast member is $150 to cover the cost of costuming, rehearsal CD’s, set construction, play t-shirts, DVD memoirs, performance royalties and copyright licenses, insurance, makeup, script and program printing, sound and lighting, district custodial fees, and many other costs that contribute to an amazing theatrical experience for our scholars. We are hopeful that knowing this information this far in advance will help families arrange their budgets and plan ahead for their family members’ participation. Participation donations are collected at our cast/parent meeting on November 30, 2009 at 6:30 in the MPR.
VOLUNTEER COMMITMENT/DISTRICT VOLUNTEER CLEARANCE: Participation also includes a parent volunteer commitment of 15 hours per cast member. The more we all work together as parents, the more ownership we all have in the success of the production, and the more enjoyment we all receive. Last year, thanks to Marianne DuMity and Lori Ashbrook keeping outstanding volunteer records, every family met their volunteer commitment and the team spirit left us all with good feelings of celebration and accomplishment rather than utter exhaustion. Over 3000 man hours goes into these annual productions, and the growth and benefit to our scholars is tremendous. However, parents are not allowed to volunteer in any capacity where they will have contact with our children without a district volunteer badge. A very limited number of volunteer assignments do not require this clearance.
If you cannot commit to volunteering 15 hours or you choose not to obtain a district volunteer clearance, you may opt out of this requirement for a $150 additional fee which will allow us to hire someone to replace you.
DISTRICT VOLUNTEER CLEARANCE: If you have not completed your district volunteer clearance process, please do not procrastinate this task. If you were a cleared volunteer last year, you may go directly to the district office on Tuesdays & Thursdays from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. to receive your district volunteer badge which includes providing proof of identity (driver’s licence) and having your picture taken. After November 1, you will be charged a $5 processing fee by the district. If you have not started the volunteer clearance process, please contact the office for the appropriate procedures as soon as possible.
Please only turn in page 3 and 4 to the Beauty and the Beast box in the office.
